I would consider myself an person who enjoys all kinds of music, and I listen to Spotify for atleast 4 hours a day… Anyway, today I will be reviewing Spotify’s first 10 songs in their “Christmas Hits” playlist. All these ratings are reflective of my opinions, and yours might be very different.
Last Christmas by Wham!
- ‘Last Christmas‘ is a single from the Pop duo Wham!, which was released in 1984. It appears to be the one “accepted” modern christmas song, and talks about heartbreak. Despite the first 27 seconds of the song being very slow, it picks up quickly but repeats the stanza like 100 times… Overall, a really good catchy song. 8/10
Rocking Around the Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee
- “Rockin’ around the Christmas tree” is one of what I would consider the 10 super popular Christmas songs. While I first heard it from a singing Christmas tree plant, I was instantly hooked. I personally can’t get enough of catchy upbeat bridges that repeat themselves, and this song perfectly targets that. 7/10
Jingle Bell Rock by Bobby Helms
- “Jingle Bell Rock” is a classic Christmas hit originally released by Bobby Helms in 1957. With its upbeat tempo and catchy lyrics, one can see why it became a popular classic. It’s very repeatable, although it can feel overplayed during the holiday season. Still, it’s hard not to sing along. 8.5/10
Feliz Navidad by José Feliciano
- José Feliciano’s 1970 hit “Feliz Navidad” is the ultimate bilingual Christmas song. It’s a world favorite, and is extraordinarily catchy. While its simplicity is part of its appeal, it can get a bit monotonous if you hear it too often in a single day. A very non-hidden gem nonetheless. 7.5/10
It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas by Perry Como
- Despite being one of the many 1950’s Christmas songs, it does a good job of setting the spirit of the season with its imagery of holiday decorations and bustling stores. Usually played in Cracker Barrels around the country in December. This is always the first song that gets me in the “christmas” mood. 7/10
A Nonsense Christmas by Sabrina Carpenter
- This is definitely a more modern “pop” song, and it’s done with the same style as Sabrina Carpenter’s “Short n’ Sweet” album, which might not be everyone’s cup of tea. While it does hint at more “explicit” topics, it also has a very catchy tune and I think that it’s an rly good song if you’re already a Sabrina fan. 6/10 (I am sadly not an huge Sabrina fan)
(There’s No Place Like) Home for the Holidays by Perry Como
- This is my absolute favorite christmas song, between the 1950’s recording “vibe” and the traditional christmas song style it just is music to my ears. I always put it in my christmas playlist, and it just has a joyous cozy vibe and is very upbeat with interjections like “from Atlanta to pacific, jee the traffic is terrific”. Though it’s less flashy than some other hits, I agree “for the holidays you can’t beat home sweet home”. 9/10
Christmas Tree Farm by Taylor Swift
- While I am a big swiftie, I didn’t quite like this song at first. It slowly grew on me though, as with most of Taylor’s albums. For the same reason as “Home for the Holidays” it just captures that cozy vibe that I personally enjoy. Although with a more newer style and production. Taylor hasn’t made any more christmas song covers since the 2000’s, so this EP is all that us swifties have for a few more years at least. It was also released in 2019, and gives me “Lover” (2019) vibes, especially the first half of the album. If you’re a fan of Lover, you will probably like this song. 10/10
