Dayton – Fall Events

Current Events/Surveys Dayton News

September has brought both challenges and community events to Dayton and the Miami Valley. Recent concerns involving public safety, extreme heat, immigration, and the death of a Wright State University student have affected communities throughout the region. At the same time, Dayton is preparing for several fall festivals and educational events.

One major story involves Pierre Damas Bel, a 20-year-old Haitian student at Wright State University and member of its honors community. His death has affected students and residents while bringing additional attention to immigration issues. Immigration has also been discussed following an ACLU of Ohio lawsuit involving ICE officers and allegations of intimidation in Springfield.

Public safety has also been a concern. Police responded to a burglary investigation and SWAT standoff in Kettering, while Dayton police investigated a shooting involving a 17-year-old girl. A separate high-speed police chase involving multiple departments ended in Franklin with an arrest.

Extreme heat has disrupted schools and athletics across the area. Some schools dismissed students early, while soccer games involving Ponitz, Belmont, and Dunbar high schools were canceled because of high temperatures.

Despite these challenges, Dayton continues to bring the community together. Carillon Historical Park offers opportunities to explore Dayton’s history through events such as an antique firefighting equipment show. The Dayton Art Institute is also hosting exhibitions, including the Max May Memorial Holocaust Art Exhibition. The museum’s annual Oktoberfest, held September 25–27, brings together food, music, art, and community while supporting the museum.
