Classical music has been around for centuries, but today people often associate it with pretentious members of the upper class and strictly study-oriented families. In reality, many students of music listen to classical music for enjoyment.
This can be seen in pop songs, rap songs, and hip-hop songs, where the composers often sample classical pieces. Some people think that those who listen to classical music exclusively listen to classical music, when in reality people who listen to classical often have a love for all music. The entire genre has set the standard for western music theory and can be seen in all genres of western music.
In its day, classical music was considered to be trendy and fresh, like the pop-music of the contemporary music scene. Stereotypes around classical music are centered around a misunderstanding of the genre. If classical music was more often talked about it would no longer be synonymous with the rich.
