Improv Club

The MVS Improv Club has just wrapped up its annual improv show for the 2025-2026 school year, and with that comes another year of jokes, ringing bells, and even more “yes-ands.” The Improv Club was founded in 2024 by Sean Gupta, a student with no prior experience. The goal of the Improv Club was to bring students together to make some fun out of their lunch breaks. Since then, the club has persisted with that same goal and has brought solace to the many burnt-out high schoolers in need of a good laugh.

The improv show itself was an absolute success. An audience gathered to watch eight club members perform genre-swapping comedy scenes, answer the world’s most difficult questions as a three-headed beast, and be bewildered by unexpected prompts thrown at them from the audience. As the concept of improv implies, the performers had absolutely no idea what was going to take place over the course of the show before it had begun. Despite this, the performers navigated through wild scenes, our audience was able to share a laugh, and the Improv Club could bring its talent to the forefront of our community.

Improv may seem daunting with its fast-paced, unpredictable approach to comedy, and it may feel impossible to even approach improv without the risk of making a fool of yourself. Despite this, Improv Club subscribes to a sentiment stated by Amy Poehler, “Nobody looks stupid when they are having fun.” This quote is as famous as it is true, for it is plastered at the front of Dayton’s Black Box Comedy Club and is the saying that the Improv Club performers remind themselves of before their show. Improv is a great way to put yourself out there in a new way, even if you don’t see yourself as a conventionally “witty” or “funny” person. Because in improv, comedy is not about being the fastest-thinking person in the room, nor is it about being the most confident. In improv, comedy is born from simply having fun.
