This December, as the days get shorter and the air colder, many different events approach. Holidays such as Christmas, Hanukkah, and Yule light the way as students end the first semester.
Christmas, a Christian holiday, celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, as well as the act of gift-giving to loved ones. The holiday is hard to miss with its bright red and green colors around its time, inviting Santa, or Old St. Nick, into homes to place presents under their tree. Those who celebrate the winter solstice through the pagan tradition of Yule will be putting up evergreen branches, feasting, burning a Yule log, and participating in the gift-giving season. In another tradition, for eight days and nights, Hanukkah will be celebrated. Each night, one candle will be lit on the menorah, with festivities starting at the first lit candle.
All in all, this season brings together families and traditions that can warm the home, and protect it from the winter outside.
