The MVS Upper School Book Club read A Forgery of Fate by Elizabeth Lim for our October meeting, and oh boy! was it a tale. At roughly 500 pages, A Forgery of Fate centers on Truyan Saigas, a young artist who sporadically paints the future. Truyan uses her artistic talents to earn a living for her family; however, instead of creating original pieces, she copies those of the masters. When her gift as an art forger gets her into trouble and with few options remaining, she agrees to marry a mysterious dragon prince who offers her a fresh start and a safe place for her family. Picked for its blend of East Asian folklore and popular western fairy tales, A Forgery of Fate did not disappoint! We enjoyed how themes of dragons, demons, and family were blended with the popular western fairy tale “The Beauty and the Beast” and balanced with a high-stakes relationship all while building upon a unique fantasy world.
The plot and flow of the story offered plenty of adventure and intrigue. However, club members agreed that even as a character focused novel, the imagery and world building was ultimately not as well written as we hoped. The end of the story (no spoilers!) wrapped up too quickly, leaving members confused and left wanting more.
