Music is very important to our society. Many people use music to express themselves or be part of a community. Listening to music can help students focus or boost creativity, and also regulate mood and reduce stress. For this edition of Ram Report, I wanted to dive into the relationships between students and their music.

From the survey, I found that students listen to music a multitude of times, mainly when driving or when a specific mood hits them. Quite a few students also wrote that they listen to music whenever they can or at any time of the day. Another time students tend to listen to music is while studying or reading. Although many students prefer to listen to music while studying, it’s not recommended to do so. Music takes mental focus to listen to, and listening to music with words can be distracting.
I sent out a survey asking students to share music they listen to and when. They were instructed to write the genre, artist, song/album from them, and when they listen to the artist.
Humans are not capable of focusing on music and reading, studying, or doing homework. It’s also recommended that you create mimic exam conditions when studying, because people do a better job of remembering information in which we learn the material.
Although this is true, many students still like to listen to music while studying. When you do so, it is recommended that you listen to music without lyrics or instrumental.

As for the genre, there was no genre that was more dominant than the others. There were some genres of music that were slightly more popular than others, alternative, pop, rap, but otherwise there are many different genres students listen to. If we look back at the times students listen to music, you can see a clear connection. Many of the genres people listen to are very energetic or emotionally charged, music that you would listen to during the times that could help you to get up and move and feel motivated.
